May 04, 2015: Just want to say thank you and welcome back to all of our regulars who have already come down to see us this spring, and to let those who may be new to the area know that by Mother's Day weekend we will have the one of the best selections of hanging baskets around, as well as a full line of vegetable and herb plants. But don't despair if you're not ready to plant just yet-- we will still have a full stock right through Memorial Day weekend, so you don't have to rush. Just a reminder that produce is now available along with many bulk dried goods, mackinaw fudge, birdseed, Calder Dairy products and an assortment of pots, soils and other garden goods-- look for the fresh picked local asparagus while it lasts! We hope to see as many new faces as possible this spring, and look forward to providing this service to the community for another summer.
April 18, 2015: We're back and ready for another year of providing fresh food and locally grown plants and produce to the community. Hopefully everyone had a good winter and is ready to work up the gardens and pots for planting-- the season is short, so plan accordingly and don't miss out on the best selection in town. We will have our usual array of plants coming in as the weather warms, heading for a peak variety during the weeks between Mother's Day and Memeorial Day. Just as a reminder, we will not have produce until May 1st, but other grocery items, seeds, garden pots, soils and accessories will be available along with a starter selection of cold tolerant perennials, vegetables and herbs, and flowering annuals in the plant department. Thank you for your continued support and hope to see you soon!
January 05, 2015: Just want to tell everyone happy new year and thank you for another successful one-- we would not be able to continue doing what we do without the support of our customers and our community. While we enjoy a little time off, we're already looking forward to getting caught up and getting back to work. For now--stay safe, enjoy the cheap gas while it lasts, don't let the winter blues get you down and keep shopping local. Thanks again, we appreciate you, and see you in the spring!
November 14, 2014: Happy Holidays to everyone. Just a reminder that we are still closed for two more weeks but will be back on the 28th to start selling trees. In the meantime, check out our Christmas Page to see what we will be offering. If you've never shopped for a fresh cut tree with us, but you always get one, you might be surprised at our selection as compared to many other retail stores. As always, stay safe and we'll look forward to seeing you soon!
October 01, 2014: Fall is here and with it comes the last month of our season. It's been a great year for produce, and the local stuff isn't gone yet. We still have homegrown tomatoes, peppers, plenty of veggies and of course-- apples, winter squash and pumpkins. This is the time to get your fall decorations out and set up the yard for halloween, and we've got the cornstalks, gourds and bales of straw to help make it all work. Check out our HALLOWEEN page for more about what we offer! We have over 10 types of apples available now, and should have plenty to sell by the bushel by this coming weekend, so if you need to make applesauce, pie filling or apple butter-- or just want to make some dumplings, we should be able to help. This month, we will see our stock decline rapidly as we begin to sell out for the season, so don't wait until the last few days to stock up on bird seed, jams and salsa or winter squash. We will keep getting regular produce and dairy deliveries until the last week, so you can still get the basics if nothing else right up until the end. Thank you for your interest in our store, and thanks in advance for stopping by to see us when you can.
July 13, 2014: Sorry for the long delay in updates, but we're still here and ready to shift into the canning season. Just want to say thank you to all of our great customers who helped make our plant season a success, and we hope you are enjoying all of the hard work you've invested in planting and maintaining your gardens and flower beds. Summer brings blueberries, sweet corn and many other local fruits and vegetables for us to enjoy. We already have Michigan blueberries available in five pound lugs or pints, and hope to see them around for many weeks to come. Local sweet corn will be available beginning today, and many other local crops are already gracing our shelves. Look for cucumbers, pickles, kale, radishes, summer squash, cabbage and lettuce from Michigan farms for sale daily. Don't forget, we carry a full line of canning supplies including pickling salt, pickling mix, salsa mix, jars, utensils, lids, pectin and more, so you can preserve the bounty of summer and enjoy it during the winter months. We would also like to remind everyone of the great local dairy products we sell from Calder Bro's Dairy, the homemade Amish jam and great selection of dried fruit, nuts, snack mixes and candies available throughout the season-- check out our product details page for more information. Thank's again for all of your support and continued dedication to keeping it local and helping small business to thrive-- we appreciate you!
May 09, 2014: It's always fun to get back to work in the spring and enjoy the time outside before the heat of summer kicks in. We are now fully stocked for the weekend with tons of flowering baskets and beautiful plants to sell for Mother's Day. We're hoping the rain holds off so you can get out and prep the beds or plant the vegetable gardens, either way, we can help with top soil and peat moss, or our full line of herb and vegetable plants. Also, local asparagus is now available so don't miss out-- the best stuff only lasts for a few weeks. Once again, Remember Mom this weekend, stay safe and enjoy the outdoors-- do some gardening!
April 26, 2014: I just want to remind everyone that although we are officially open, we will not have fresh produce until May 1st. Feel free to come in and check out our huge selection of starter perennials and other cold tolerant plants. We also have Calder Dairy products, jams and salsas and bulk dried goods to get started. Mothers Day is only two weeks away, so we will be filling up the plant yard with flowering baskets, rose bushes and other great gift ideas for mom. Thanks for reading and we hope to see you soon!
April 10, 2014: We hope everyone has been enjoying the recent spring weather and are excited to let you know that we plan to reopen on April 25th. With luck, this pattern of mild spring temperatures will continue and we can get our gardens and flowerbeds planted on time. Don't forget, the average last frost in southeast Michigan is May 15th so let's not get carried away with tender annuals and vegetables just yet! We do hope to have perennials, cold hardy vegetable plants and annuals right away though. We will not have produce until at least the 30th of April, but most of our grocery and garden products will be available right away, including Calder Dairy products, bulk mixes, dried fruit, nuts and beans, Mackinaw Fudge and our line of Amish made jams and salsa. Also we should have soil and garden goods for sale including gladiola bulbs, terra cotta pots, specialty soils and gardening gloves. Many people don't realize that you can plant potatoes and onions from sets, which we have a good selection of, and that they can be planted early, no matter the risk of frost. We look forward to seeing all of our old customers back in the store this spring along with all of the new ones. Thank you for your interest in our store and our website. Here's to a great 2014 season and thanks in advance to all of our loyal customers!
February 3, 2014: I know I missed the whole Christmas season without an update, but for those of you who came down and got a tree from us-- Thank You! We had a great year in 2013 and are ready to move on to a new one. (As soon as we make it through this extremely winter-like winter) This is always a time of year in which it pays to reflect on our actions, or lack thereof during the previous seasons, either spiritually, physically or otherwise. We can think about the ups and downs, the mistakes and accomplishments, the fun times or the sad ones, but most of all we can look back and say-- we made it through another year. Last year at Coleman's Farm Market, we learned how valuable our customers are, and how much they enjoy shopping at our store. It seemed as the 2013 season came to a close back in October, we had a larger number of people than usual thanking us for being there and regretting the fact that we have to close for the winter. We cannot express enough our gratitude towards those people who support us throughout the spring summer and fall, as well as the positive word of mouth advertising that they do for us. On another note, our local economy seems to be improving and there seem to be many new residents coming into the area, which helps us in building our business and helps the economy in general. I would like to thank all of those newcomers for shopping in our store, and let them know how exciting it is for us every time someone says, "This is my first time coming in here." Even better is when those same people say, "You have a really nice store, I will definitely be back." It's the simple things that make us happy. Best of luck and fortune to all, have a safe and enjoyable winter-- we hope to see you in the spring. (As soon as we lock down an opening date, I'll get it posted in here.)
October 18, 2013: Well the end of another season is quickly approaching, but we're not done yet. We will still have a good selection of produce and dairy through the last few days of operation, along with the last of our dried goods, jams and salsas and other seasonal products. And of course pumpkins will be available until Halloween Day along with most of the fall decor like indian corn, gourds and straw. Don't forget about apples as well. We still have many varieties available by the pound, bag or bushel so if you need to make sauce or pie filling or just want some lunchbox apples for the kids, we can probably help you out. We have put clearance prices on all of our birding products and garden goods that remain, so if you know a bird lover, now would be a good time to find a good deal on a tube feeder. Finally I just want to thank everyone for supporting us and allowing us to have another great season. Come see us after Thanksgiving for the perfect Christmas Tree, or wreath to bring the spirit of the holidays into your home!
August 23, 2013: Wondering where the summer went? So are we! We are now just a week away from Labor Day and canning season is moving along rapidly. We are still in the middle of peach season and bushels are available, but don't put off getting them done-- you never know when they might be gone for the year. In addition to peaches, tomatoes are now available by the bushel box for canning, so it's officially time to get the sauces and salsas and stewed tomatoes into the jar. We sell a full line of canning essentials including jars, pectin, bands and lids, utensils and more. Don't forget we also have all the veggies needed for sauce and salsa making like onions, fresh herbs and garlic, hot and sweet peppers and celery. How about blueberries? Yes we do still have them available in quantity, at least through this weekend, but they won't last much longer. Also, a few Michigan apples have started coming in, so it won't be long before we have caramel apples, cider and many types of apples by the bags and bushels-- the fall season is not so far off. On a different note, I would like to say that I've seen many new faces in the store recently and would like to personally thank every patron, both new and old, for shopping with us! It's so cool to meet new people and provide the great fresh produce that is in season at this time of the year. Don't forget, sweet potatoes are still on sale until the end of the month, so treat yourself to a pie or some candied yams before the price goes back up. Thanks again for your continued support.
July 22, 2013: I don't want to bore you guys with too much here so we'll just do a quick run down of what's new. Sweet Corn is now available, picked fresh daily-- ask about getting a five dozen bag for freezing or canning! Michigan Muskmelons are starting to come in now so don't miss out on these sweet treats while they are around. Also, there are plenty of Blueberries available by the pint and lug, so get some in the feezer or make some jam while they are plentiful. Don't forget we sell a full line of canning products from jars and lids to pectin, funnels and pickling salt. And speaking of pickling, we now have Michigan grown Pickles by the half bushel or pound-- they have a shorter season than many other crops so don't put off getting some dill sours or bread and butter pickles in the jars for winter! Finally, I know we are all extremely anxious for homegrown tomatoes, but we have not started that season just yet... expect them, as well as peaches in the next week to ten days though. Thanks for checking in with us and we hope to see you at the shop.
July 13, 2013: We hope everyone is having a great summer so far and had a safe Independence Day holiday. We have been enjoying this temperate weather, excepting the large amounts of rain, and hope you have as well. Mid July brings us into blueberry season and the beginning of the canning season. We now have Michigan blueberries available, as well as a full line of canning products-- ask us about a five pound lug for freezing or canning! Later in the month, more local fruit and vegetables will come into season so keep an eye on our updates for sweet corn, tomatoes, peaches and more. Don't forget, blueberries may have just started and strawberries may be passed their season, but there are plenty of Michigan crops now on the shelves every day; cucumbers, pickles, summer squash and zuchinni, leaf, romaine and iceberg lettuce, radishes, green beans, cabbage and collards, kale, swiss chard and more are now grown by Michigan farmers and brought in to our store three times a week for maximum freshness. Please stop in and partake in the early season of Michigan bounty... you won't be disappointed if you enjoy fresh produce. Finally, just a reminder that we are running a special on fresh southern peaches throughout this month, and they have been excellent.
June 15, 2013: It's beginning to feel like summer now, but the planting season isn't quite over. We have plenty of vegetable plants, annuals and premium hanging baskets still in stock, so if you haven't finished your yard and garden, come check out whats left so you can get it done before the it's too late. All plants are now being sold at 20% off regular price. Strawberries are now in season, but they are never around for long, so don't put off making that jam and don't miss out on the taste of fresh Michigan strawberries. More local produce is coming into season each week now-- we have local radishes, leaf lettuce, greens, rhubarb and more already in stock. And to all the dads out there, Happy Father's Day!
June 04, 2013: Would like to start off by saying thank you to all of the enthusiastic gardeners who have made our spring season a good one, and thanks to everyone for supporting our business. It has been an great year for planting, and its not over yet. We still have plenty of vegetable plants, annuals, perennials, and hanging baskets to sell, so come check out what's left before there is none. Also, Michigan produce is already starting to grace our shelves as we are currently selling Michigan grown rhubarb, asparagus, cabbage and greens with more veggie crops like leaf lettuce and radishes right around the corner. Also, a few locally grown strawberries have started to come in, and we're hoping for a plentiful season for them. Local strawberries should be available in quantity within the next week or so, just call for current availability or to place an order. Finally, it is graduation party season and what better place to come for all of the fresh produce needed to serve a big get together then your local farm market? Keep us in mind for all of your produce needs-- we work hard to provide quality products at reasonable prices and the more we sell, the easier it is for us to keep things fresh and affordable. Once again, thank you for supporting Coleman's Farm Market, we appreciate you.
April 10, 2013: Well it looks like our vacation is just about over and even though spring is slow in coming this year, we are anxious to get out and start gardening. We've decided to wait until April 26th to open this year, with the cool spring we're having, it's best to let those plants stay in the greenhouse as long as possible. However, we will be starting off that Friday with many cold tolerant plants outside and plenty of bulk grocery items, garden seeds, potting soils and products from Calder Dairy inside. We will have our full line of produce available by the first of May, and will begin bringing in more plants as the weather permits. Of course, Mother's Day is Sunday the 12th, so we will target that weekend to have a generous supply of bedding plants, along with plenty of hanging baskets for all of the moms out there. It feels great to be back up at the store setting up and we're ready to get the doors opened for a promising new season. Come see what we have to offer in the month of May-- we've been a favorite stop for many dedicated gardeners for over 25 years and plan to continue to offer you a well organized and maintained selection of plants at great prices. For those who are unfamiliar with our huge variety of plants, check out THE FLOWER BED, right here on the site for a glimpse of what we offer. Thank you for your interest and support, as a small business, we value you as much as you value the convenience of our store. Happy Spring and see you all soon!
February 25, 2013: We would like to let you all know that even though it is winter, we are still thinking of our customers and are grateful for all of you. And thank you to all of the loyal customers, and newcomers, who helped us to sell a record number of Christmas Trees during December of 2012. We sold every single tree off the lot and more homemade wreaths than ever! Thanks to all of those people who frequent our site and facebook page, we love knowing that people are checking out our site even when we are not open and we've even had a few e-mail requests for our products during this time. We are looking forward to getting back to work-- the paperwork is caught up, and we are well rested and ready to get back to doing what we do. Unfortunately there are still two more months of layover yet to go so let's don't get ahead of ourselves. The store will reopen during the last week of April as usual, we just have to get there. Hopefully with a more normal winter than we had last year, the fruit trees will provide us with a bountiful crop and those who missed out on peaches, pears and apples last year will be able to get the jars filled up and cupboards stocked again. (We are some of those people... man it stinks to not have fresh jarred peaches this winter.) Anyway, we just wanted to give everyone a heads up on our plans and let you know that we are definitely ready to get back to work! Be careful and stay happy-- see you in a couple months!
November 15, 2012: Thanks to everyone for another fun season at the market! We are set to bring in some Christmas Trees and open back up in just one more week. We will be back with fresh evergreen Trees, Wreaths and Garland as well as some of our regular items such as Amish made jams and salsa, Droll Yankees bird feeders and wild bird feed starting the day after Thanksgiving, November 23rd. If you use a real cut Christmas tree or know someone who does, be sure to check us out or tell them about us-- we sell the highest quality trees available and offer a great selection and reasonable prices. Check out our CHRISTMAS page to learn more about what we have to offer this season. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!
September 26, 2012: Wow, time flies when you're having fun eh? It's been another active summer at the market even with the funny weather we've experienced in the area, the produce has been good and the customers have been as wonderful as ever. We appreciate all of your business and your interest in supporting local companies and farms. It's fall now, and we've changed gears and started to wind down our season. Yet with the slowing of our season, it is only the beginning of some. Apples are in short supply this year, but we have been lucky enough to get a few from a generous local grower. We have cider made from Michigan apples as well. Halloween will be upon us before you know it, and we have all the decorations you need to spruce up your front stoop for the holiday-- cornstalks, bales of straw, indian corn, gourds, winter squash, hardy mums and pumpkins are now available while supplies last. Many Michigan grown produce items are still in stock through October, so don't give up on the fresh stuff just yet! Also, concord grapes are still available for now, but don't wait if you are looking to make juice, jelly or wine, as they may disappear early. It looks like we're in line for some dry, moderate weather so get outside and enjoy it before the snow comes. Thank you for your interest in our store!
July 03, 2012: Welcome to summer everybody, not as though we haven't already seen some very summer-like weather, but Michigan Sweet Corn is now available, picked fresh every day, making it officially summer at Coleman's. Tomorrow is Independence Day, so we would like to wish you all a very happy and safe one-- we will be open for normal operating hours, so come on down and get your fresh fruits and veggies for the barbeque or family get together. We have jumbo watermelons, fresh Michigan blueberries, fresh picked sweet corn along with so many other fresh food items, how could your picnic be complete without fresh produce? The season has been a dry one so far, but the heat is bringing early crops, and the Michigan produce is really getting in swing. In addition to Sweet Corn and Blueberries, we now have local Lettuce, Radishes, Cabbage, Cucumbers, Greens, Squash and Green Onions as well as Michigan grown Gladiolas. We would like to thank everyone that bought plants for their gardens from us this year, making it one of our best planting seasons ever-- and if you still have holes to fill or need another hanging basket, we still have a limited selection of perennials, specialty plants and hanging baskets remaining through this weekend, on sale of course. Coleman's is a great place to shop in the summer, so tell your friends and family where to getthe bestlocal products and unique food items around, and help us continue to serve you asour family hasfor over 25 years.
May 25, 2012: We would again like to apologize for the delay in updates, but it has been a busy month in the plant department and we've been delighted to see so many new customers finding our store. Memorial Day weekend is a good time for folks to get out and finish (or start) the yardwork, and there is still a great selection of plants available. Starter perennials are still available, but the variety is dwindling daily. We have plenty of hanging baskets and specialty annuals for your pots and window boxes, as well as a good selection of bedding annuals. Now is the time to put in your vegetable garden, and we have our full stock of over 75 types of tomatoes and peppers, and dozens of other vegetable plants like cucumbers, cabbage, lettuce, onions and more. An herb garden can provide beauty to your yard along with giving healthy, delicious seasoning to your meals, and we have dozens of varieties to choose from including basil, cilantro, chives, oregano, thyme and parsley along with many less common types. Just remember, after this weekend, it will be hard to find many plants so don't put off your yard, enjoy the summer-like weather, make some lemonade and beautify your space! Also, this weekend marks the start of our locally grown strawberry season and the last of the locally grown asparagus, we will take orders for flats of strawberries any time, but supply is always tempermental based on the weather, so get them while they last. We will have sweet corn, watermelons, Southern peaches, California cantaloupes along with a full line of produce for your party and picnic needs, and we will be open all day on Monday. Finally, I would just like torecognizeall of our loyal customers who have come out visit us, and feel humbled by the appreciation and love that many have for our business. Thank you all. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!
April 17, 2012: It's been a great spring so far, and many of us are ready to get an early start on the gardening. We've been asked by so many people about our starting date, we've decided to move it up three days and will now plan to be open this Friday, the 20th!We won't have produce until closer to the first of May, but will be fully stocked in many other items right away. Calder Dairy products, bulk grocery items, jams and salsa, vegetable seeds and seed potatoes, and lots of plants. We will have a huge selection of perennials, a few herbs and vegetables, and cold hardy annuals for sale. Expect many, many more specialty plants and annuals as the season progresses. Hope to see you allvery soon.
March 13, 2012: We're getting closer to a new season, and hoping that this unseasonably warm weather will continue throughout the spring months and allow everyone a chance to clean up their yard and get the planting done on time. We plan to get busy setting up very soon, and will open our doors for the season no later than Monday, April 23rd. As usual we will start slow, bringing in plants, dairy products, bulk grocery items and more to fill up the shelves during the first week, with produce starting by April 30th. If you are anxious for the Hot and Sweet pickles or our homemade jams and salsa, please hang in there a little longer, the full line of these products, with a few new items including applesauce, will be available the day we open. Be well, be happy, and we will see you all very soon!
January 30, 2012: We hope everyone is enjoying the mild winter and thinking spring. We're just finishing up 2011 files and glad to have another great year at Coleman's Farm Market in the books! A huge thanks to our regulars for their support in buying us out at the end of October and in such a successful Christmas season. There we plenty of new faces last year as well, many late in the season, so we're hoping to see some of you back this spring to see our full selection of plants and food items. One of our favorite things in the winter is watching the birds and squirrels in our yard, feeding from the feeders and eating the peanuts and bread scraps we throw out for them, it takes away some of the winter blahs and occasionally provides comic relief that is so greatly needed now. I do plan to add a birding page this winter to help encourage home bird feeding, as we sell both a full line of American Made feeders and a full line of seed from a local family business, so look for a new slot on the navigator and learn more about feeding the birds. As soon as I get a little better with technology, we might actually get some of the pictures we have of the store onto the site-- starting with replacing the dark sky picture on thewelcome page. The next update shouldhave our planned opening date for this year-- until then, have a safe and happy winter.
October 11, 2011: Once again I apologize for not keeping up with this blog a little better. The summer seems to have ended so fast, and our season is quickly coming to a close. However, it's not over yet as we have three weeks of fall sales to go, and there is no shortage of pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks, hardy mums or winter squash. We will continue to carry produce until the final weekend, but the variety of items is diminishing daily. It is the season for apples and apple cider, both of which are plentiful right now. We also have seasonal items such as brussels sprouts, pomegranites, asian pears, caramel apples and roman fall beans. Keep in mind that our selection of dry goods will disappear as the days go on, so stop in and get your favorite trail mix or chocolate snack before they are all gone. We do expect to get another delivery of jam and salsa so those should be in good supply through the Christmas season. We are so happy to see new faces every day. This year has been full of new customers that compliment our store and the products they have found, and it continues even now at the end of the year. I'd like to give a special thanks today to the couple from Arkansas who drove 800hundred miles to buy apples, were treated rudely at another establishment, and found us happy to sell them 9 and a half bushels of apples at reasonable prices-- we hope it was as good of an experience for them as it was for us and hope to see them again next year. Finally, I would like toremindeveryone that it is the season to plant tulips, daffodils, crocuses, allium and hyacinths in order to get those bright beautiful blooms in the early spring. Wehave a decent selection of bulbs in stock and would love to see them sell so that we can plan to have them again next year-- at this point it looks like we will nolonger carryfall bulbs after this season so if you would like to see us continue selling these spring wonders, stop in and buy a couple-- they are easy to plantand require little or no care until next year. Have a safe and happyfallseason! We hope you can find time to come inand see what'sstill available before it's too late!
August 19, 2011: It's been a busy couple of weeks at the market, and I wouldfeel guilty if I didn't get in here and let everybody know what's going on at Coleman's.Canning season is in full force right now-- here's a list of some of the things that people are canning and freezing: Tomatoes, Corn, Blueberries, Peaches, Pickles, Beets,Beans and more.Yes, we can currently provide you with any of these items (availability may vary) in bulk. Bushels of tomatoes and peaches are hot this weekend, and for those that haven'tgotten their blues in the freezer yet, this may beyour last chance atgetting a 5 pound lug before theseason finishes up. Pickles are also nearing an end, but we have plenty this weekend so don't putoff the bread and butter slices anylonger or you might miss out.And don't forget, wehave plenty of canning jars and supplies to sell so you can avoidhunting for jars thisLabor Day Weekend by buying them when you get the produce. This year, Calder Dairy sales have beenon the rise in our store, and I'd like to thankeveryone for their support of both our business and that of another locally owned and operatedestablishment--I know it's hard not to tell people how much I enjoy these products when they are shopping in our store. One more big thanks for a vendor that hashelped us build a fine candy department--Northern Confections of Mackinaw City. Our customers have enjoyed the taffy, fudge, caramel corn, peanut brittleandchocolate covered sea foamall summer andmostly because the products have been so well made and so fresh with every delivery. (I'd recommend you coming in to trysome of these but I'd hate to be accused of pushingsweets on anybody.)Finally, lets not forget the fresh muskmelon and watermelon thatarecoming fromMichigan farmsnow--a great summertime treat in so many situations. Thanks for reading andhave a safe and enjoyable last couple weeks of summer. Labor Day is right around the corner!
July 22, 2011: I must apologize for the lengthy delay in updating, but since my last post, things have been very busy at Coleman's. We had a successful plant season and are now transitioning into the summer canning season. Sweet Corn is now available from our local growers, Brookside Farm, and will be picked fresh daily until October. There are plenty of local crops available and many more to come in the next two weeks. Michigan Blueberries are now in season and are selling like mad-- the crop has been amazingly sweet so far. Other local produce in season include, lettuce, cabbage, greens and squash; green beans, hot peppers, radishes, muskmelons and cucumbers are also Michigan grown. We hope to see Michigan tomatoes and Peaches in the next two weeks, and will be selling Blueberries by the 5 pound lug for several more weeks. Thank you to all of our regular gardeners and those who had just found us this year-- our plant season was a big success and we are glad to see so many people getting into gardening! One last note for this post would be that we are excited to see so many new faces in the store this year-- it is a good feeling to know that people enjoy our products enough to tell their friends about us and get them to come check out the store. Stay cool and be careful this summer-- it's been a hot one with no relief in sight!
May 06, 2011: The season is off to a slow start thanks to Ma Nature, but we won't give up on nice weather that easily. It is drying out now, and the chance for frost is nearly past so it's time to start thinking about working up the garden and planting the flower beds. We have tons of stuff in stockfor Mother's Day and more to come. If you want perennials-- come check out our selection, currently numbering over 350 different species. If you want hanging baskets for mom, we have plenty to choose from, especially this weekend. If youwant herbs-- come check out our selection of over 75 types of them including basil, thyme, oregano, rosemary, mint and lavender. We also have many annuals in stock-- flats of impatiens, marigolds, petunias, snapdragons and more as well asdozens of types of specialty plants. And that just tells you about the outside-- inside, we have our full line of produce, jams and salsas, Calderdairy, bulkfoods, seeds, birding products, mackinaw fudge andmore instock withplenty yetto come. Soif you're in the area,or inneed ofplants or produce, come see for yourself--you might be surprised at the value and convenience we offer! Happy Mother'sDay to all the moms and their families, and let's hope Mother Nature gets a nice (non-cold tolerant)hanging basket and sends us somebetter weather.
March 15, 2011: Opening day is set, but no early date as previously considered. We plan to open our doors this year on April 25th, which is the day after Easter. We will be using the first few days to stock our plant, dairy, grocery and birding departments and hope to have a full line of fresh produce available on Friday the 29th. As I've mentioned in a previous update, we don't plan to change the system this year, so things should look and feel about the same as they did last year. We will start with mostly perennials and cold hardy veggies, herbs and annuals, have a full stock of Hanging Baskets by Mother's Day, and have nearly complete stock a week after Mother's day in the plant department. We will have a full line of Calder Dairy products and dried goods by Wednesday the 27th. Hopefully we can schedule our jams and salsas to be delivered by the time we open, but no gaurantees. Also look for us to have seed potatoes and onion sets right away, along with gladiola bulbs, asparagus roots and plenty of gardening supplies. In addition, I'd like to mention that we have a much more complete PRODUCE 101 page here on the site that offers a truncated bit of information on just about all of the produce items we sell. So with that, we will be looking forward to seeing some faces, old and new, come the end of next month. Happy St. Patrick's Day (It's gonna be a nice one) and Happy Easter-- let's get out and enjoy these warm spring days ahead!
February 24, 2011: It's getting closer all the time and we're becoming more anxious about getting back to work. We've just gotten back to work on the site, so not much has changed before now-- look for pictures of some of our displays from last year and other shots from around the store at different seasons scattered through the site. A birdfeeding page as well as a picture page will probably be added in before the onset of next season. We hope that everyone is enjoying this snowy winter and not letting the blues get to you-- next time you're feeling down, just think to yourself 'Coleman's will be open soon enough, I'll make it.' Again, when we decide on a definite opening date, we will post it up here so you know exactly when that will be. Take care and be safe from us to you.
January 23, 2011: Well it's winter time and we're already sick of it. Upon finishing up with the taxes and inventory this month, we find ourselves thinking spring! 2010 was a middle of the road kinda year and we're anxious to get back to work providing so many great products for the community and have a more productive year. We'd like to thank everybody that supported us in 2010 including our regulars, our facebook fans, our yearly christmas tree buyers and anyone else that spent their hard earned money keeping us in business. Unfortunately we have no upgrades or additions planned for the upcoming year, so look for our store to be pretty much the same in 2011. Besides, after the new paint job, the new parking lot, the new roof and upgraded plant tables, we don't have much left to fix! I will be adding to the website over the course of the winter, so look for a more complete PRODUCE 101 page and many more pictures on the site, among other tweaks and changes that may occur. We may have an earlier opening than previous years, so keep an eye on the update page to see when we announce our opening day. Have a wonderful winter season, bundle those little ones up good and drive safely out there. Look for another update to come before the end of February.
December 01, 2010:Happy Holidays everybody! We're back for the Christmas season and the trees are beautiful. We have a great selection of 10 different type of evergreens to liven up your house during this joyous season. Choose from Fraser Fir, Scotch Pine, Noble Fir, Blue Spruce, Douglas Fir and more and check out our selection of real evergreen wreaths and garland when you stop in. Unfortunately we are not open for the full line of produce, dairy and grocery items as we are in the summer, but we do have a few items from Calder Dairy including their famous eggnog, chocolate milk and ice cream. We also have plenty of bird feeders and feed which make excellent Christmas presents for the nature lover on your list. Please, give us a call for pricing and availability of trees as the selection diminishes quickly as the next two weeks go on. Thank you for your continued support and we'd like to wish everybody a safe and happy holiday season!
October 18, 2010: October is quickly coming to an end, which will mean the end of our produce season for 2010. We would like to ask that everybody come out and see us one more time before the selection is gone completely. Keep in mind that for the last week we are open, we will not restock anything, so when it's gone it's gone for the year-- don't miss out! As it stands, the selection of jams and salsas is thinning rapidly, the variety of produce is disappearing and the dry goods are rapidly going out the door. We do still have a great selection of apples, pumpkins, squash and other fall related items, but again, don't waste any time because even some of these items, like the beautiful fall Mums, will also run out. Remember that Calder Dairy products will be available until the last few days, as well as most produce. Thank you for a great season, and please come see us for a real Christmas Tree or Wreath after Thanksgiving-- we offer the best selection in town! Check out ourChristmas Page for more information about our trees.
October 05, 2010: Well the last month of our season has arrived and we're winding down fast. It's been a great year and we'd like to thank all of our regulars for their continued support... without you guys this place wouldn't be the same. Now on to the products. October is the time for seasonal decor at Coleman's and we've got all you need to spruce up your yard for Halloween and Thanksgiving: Pumpkins, Gourds, Straw Bales, Cornstalks, Winter Squash, Indian Corn and Hardy Mums all come in handy when decorating for these holidays and we've got them all at great prices! Don't let the cooler weather stop you from coming out and grabbing a taste of fall-- with twelve varieties of Michigan Apples, Apple Cider, Caramel Apples and Apple Pies, there's sure to be something that tickles your tastebuds. Keep in mind that over the next few weeks, the Michigan produce will become more scarce, but tomatoes, peppers and many more items are still in stock as of today. Also, many of the other regular items we carry will be disappearing, so if you have a favorite type of dry goods or jam that you can't live without, make your way down before it is all gone. As a final note, we do still sell Tulip, Daffodil, Hyacinth and Allium Bulbs in our Fall Bulbs section and have plenty to choose from-- sales on these have been very slow this year and we're afraid that if we don't move enough of these spring beauties, they will have to be removed from our fall lineup next year. (Which to me would be a tragedy as I see fall bulbs as an integral part of the season.) So thank you for your time and your support and please come see us again before we shut the doors on the 2010 season! Check out our Halloween Page for more information on this season at Coleman's Farm Market.
August31, 2010: Labor Day is upon us and with the cooler weather in the forecast, this weekend promises to be a great one for canning, if not for going to the beach. We haveregular and roma tomatoesin good supply for the weekend, as well ashot peppers, in case you wanted to makesome of your own salsa. Chopper peppers, forfreezing, will be available this weekend as well, along with Michigan Prune Plums,GalaApples and many other vegetables.Michigangreen beans and beets are other favorites for canning over the holiday weekend. Werecentlystocked our canning supplies, so we should have plenty of quart, pint and halfgallon jars for sale through the weekend along with many other necessary canningutensils.Sweet corn isn't going to last forever, but is stillin good supply andquality, so get yours in the freezerbefore the good stuff is gone. As the next two months go by, you will find that the selectionof items offered will dwindle as we get ready to shutdown for another year, but there will be plenty to buy until theveryend, so please don't give up on us too early in the fall-- we need your support during the slow season. One last item of note-- Hardy Mums will be available next week, and will be the first of many Fall and Halloween related products to hit the shelves over the next few weeks, so start thinking PUMPKINS AND CORNSTALKS!
August19, 2010: It's time to start thinking about Labor Day and back to school, but that doesn't mean that summer is over. We provide local products for canning and freezing right through September and October when the weather is good. Many people will be canning tomatoes, beans and salsas during the Labor Day holiday weekend, and we hope to be ready for all of your needs with plenty of Canning Jars and supplies. It's been a great month so far and we hope to keep the trend going. For those who missed the Red Haven Peaches-- don't give up on canning your peaches for this year, we should have a couple of other varieties for canning before the peaches go out and the apples come in. This weekend we will have Loring Peaches, New York Six Prune Plums, Roma and regular tomatoes for canning so don't hesitate or wait-- the time to get these projects done is now! As a final note, I would like to give it up for another of our vendors: Rocky Peanut Co. of Ferndale provides us with the freshest and most tasty dry goods available from trail mixes and dried fruit to candy and baked sesame products. They have had a rough summer for business so help us help them and pick up a tub of dried goods when you're in next-- you won't be disappointed. Enjoy this wonderful August weather we've been having!!
July 29, 2010: The summer is moving right along and we're happy to be here! We love our regular customers that provide us with familiar faces to serve week in and week out, but we love to meet new people too-- business could always be better so please, if you have been in and liked something you found, tell a friend about it! After all, the best advertisement is word of mouth, and we sell many unique and delicious items. Here's a rundown of things that are hot around our store, and some things that have been here for a while: Michigan Sweet Corn is abundant so don't waste time getting some in the freezer or jar, it can be purchased in 5 dozen bags anytime and has been excellent lately. Michigan Tomatoes are in, bushels may be around in the next couple of weeks if the weather holds. Michigan Peaches are due in a week, so get your canning kettles out and come check our stock of canning supplies. Northwest Cherries are going to disappear before you know it, so enjoy the taste of summer before those are gone, both Bing and Rainier are still available. Michigan veggies are abundant so if you need pickles and fresh dill, beets, hot peppers or summer squash for canning, ask us about case prices. A new batch of Droll Yankee's Bird Feeders is hitting our shelf today and fresh feed from Cutler Dickerson is plentiful, so treat yourself to nature and hang a bird feeder in your yard today-- the enjoyment you can find watching birds is hard to explain! Bearded Irises are due in the next week or two-- you can stun your neighbors with large showy blossoms next spring with a few well placed German Irises. And finally, as always I'd like to thank the folks of Calder Bros Dairy for their delicious products that keep so many of our customers happy-- if you've never tried their Ice Cream, do yourself a favor and splurge just once. It's great to provide all of these wonderful things to the people of my own town and the surrounding communities I just hope we can keep you all coming back once you've been here! Let's have a safe and pleasant August my friends!!
July08, 2010: Well the parking lot is done and we are gearing up for a busy summer! Local sweet corn is now available, along with blueberries and many veggies. We have a full stock of canning supplies and will be anxious for local tomatoes and peaches to start coming in by the end of the month. We hope that the improved appearance of the site will attract more customers, but we still count on word of mouth as the best advertisement-- so tell your friends where to find the freshest and best in quality produce so that we can continue to thrive and provide the bounty of Michigan's farms to you and your family! A special shout out to our Facebook fans, now numbering close to 300-- thank you for your support and feedback. Hope to see you soon.
June25, 2010:Thanks to all of you who supportedus during planting season! We had a great spring aside from some dreary weekends early on, but the plantsare nearly gone and we are lookingforward, thinking of sweet corn, blueberries and peaches fromMichigan farms. Manyveggies arenow available fromMichigan, including lettuces, cabbage, greens, radishes, summer squash and cilantro. We expect blueberries from the west side of the state to be coming any time now, so start thinking about canning some jam and syrup or freezing some whole berries for winter. Please note that we are two weeks away from a two day shutdown in which we will have our parking lot completely reconstructed-- we know it will be hard to live without us for two days in July, but itis a much neededupgrade that will make the store safer and more attractive. This will take place on July 7th and8th, but we will be back up and runningon Friday the 9th. Thanks again to all of our gardeners and landscapersthat keep ourbusiness successfulin May, and we hope to see you all in during the summer to enjoy the freshest produce in town and all the bounty thatMichigan has to offer.
June03, 2010: The holiday is over, but there are still plenty of plants to choose from and produce is picking up. We will be offering a good line of vegetable and herb plants through the next couple of weeks, but the selection will steadily decrease, so don't waste time-- come down and see what's left before someone beats you to it! However, as plants wind down, the produce is coming in strong-- local strawberries from the Adrian area are now available, picked fresh every day. Also, we are getting cabbage, lettuce, greens, radishes, zucchini, and asparagus from Michigan farms, with more coming all the time. We will be stocking our canning supplies sometime in the next week, so if you plan to make strawberry jam this year, keep us in mind for your jars, lids and pectin. Hope to see more new faces out at the store, it's always a pleasure for us to hear new customers say 'I'm so glad I found this place!'
May 20, 2010: Planting season is going to be over before you know it so come out and see our full selection before it dwindles. We try to keep a full stock of plants through the Memorial Day holiday weekend, but some things are already becoming scarce. We will still have a full line of vegetable plants until the first week of June and plenty of annuals and hanging baskets until the end of June. Look for locally grown asparagus and rhubarb in stock now as well as our usual line of Dry Goods, Dairy, and Garden Supplies. We would like to thankour good friends at Devon'sFudge who supply our Mackinaw candies, their products have been selling well and we now offer salt water taffy in a bulk display-- choose your own flavors! See you soon.
May 03, 2010: We are in full swing with produce, tons of plants, grocery, dairy and dried goods. We've seen great business to get us going and would like to thank all of you for your support! Look for local asparagus, rhubarb, radishes and greens in the next few weeks, and strawberries in early June. Keep in mind that the selection of perennials will decrease as the month goes on, so come in and check out the full selectioin before it dwindles. Hanging baskets for Mother's Day are the focus this week so Don't Forget Mom-- come check out our great selection of baskets, rose bushes and specialty annuals that make great Mother's Day presents. A special thanks to all of our facebook fans, over 180 as of today!
April 23, 2010: Great to be open again! We had a very productive first day and have to thank our customers for coming out to see what we had going on. Sorry we can't get everything all at once, but it won't take long to fill the shelves. Right now we will focus on perennials, cold hardy vegetable plants and seed starting or bed preparation supplies. By Mother's Day, we will have a full line of hanging baskets and many more annuals and vegetable plants. Thanks again to all those that came out to see us on Day 1 and to all those checking out our site... we've now gathered the support of over 125 fans on facebook!
April 08, 2010: Getting closer to opening day and the anxiety is building. Thanks to everybody for their overwhelming interest in our store... we've been getting 20 to 50 hits a day on the site and have accumulated over 50 fans on facebook... WOW! We've been steady working on setting up the store and will be putting a fresh coat of paint on the outside before we start up. Keep in mind that we will not have produce until a week after we open. (We need some time to bring in products from our many vendors before the produce kicks in so that we're not too frantic on the first weekend.) Hope to see everybody soon!
March 08, 2010: Site has been indexed by multiple search engines and comes up first when customers search for the words 'Colemans Farm Market'! A few more tweaks have been added, but the produce page is still quite unfinished. Store opening date set! Look for us to open our doors for plants, dairy and grocery items on April 23, 2010 with produce on the 30th!
February 20, 2010: Published site at about 65% completion, still need to do christmas page and finish both product details and produce 101. Pictures still to come for all pages.
January 25, 2010: Site is coming along great but lots of work still to come. Hope to have it published online before the end of February... we'll see how it goes!
